REAL ID Now Required for US Domestic Flights

Effective today, May 7, 2025, travelers flying within the United States must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid passport, to board domestic flights.

This change is part of a nationwide effort to standardize and enhance the security of state-issued IDs. If your license does not have the star symbol in the upper corner, it may not meet the new federal requirements.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Look for the Star: REAL ID licenses have a star in the top corner. If yours doesn't, it's time to upgrade.

  • Where to Get It: Visit your local DMV with proof of identity, social security number, and two proofs of residency.

  • Check Requirements by State: For personalized instructions, visit the official REAL ID page from the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Avoid Last-Minute Stress: Processing times can vary—schedule your DMV appointment soon to ensure you’re ready to travel.

  • Alternative IDs: Valid passports, military IDs, or DHS Trusted Traveler cards (like Global Entry) will also be accepted.
