New Requirement for UK Travel Now in Effect

If you're considering a trip to the United Kingdom, there's a new travel requirement that's just kicked in. Effective as of January 8th, visitors from the US will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip. It's a relatively simple process, but one you don't want to forget about.

Here are the details:

Who needs an ETA?
Travelers from the US, Canada, and a number of other countries that do not require a visa. For a full list of nationalities requiring the ETA, check here.

How do I get the authorization?
Apply directly through the official UK government website, which also has links to simple ETA application apps, and additional information about requirements. There is a £10 cost to apply (about $12.50). You will need to upload or take photos of yourself and your passport.

How long does it take?
The approval process typically takes about three days, but may occasionally take longer. If you know when you're travelling there's no reason to wait- be safe and start the process early. Your ETA is valid for two years (unless your passport expires sooner).

Do children need to apply?
Yes. Everyone entering the UK needs their own ETA, including children and babies.

What if I'm just passing through?
Sorry, even if you're just connecting through the UK on your way to somewhere else, you'll need an ETA or risk getting stopped by passport control.

What about the rest of Europe?
Although the new requirement only applies to the UK, changes for other European countries are coming soon. The new ETIAS process is projected to launch in Spring 2025, and will require a similar authorization to travel to many European countries. We'll have details as soon as they're announced.
